In her new work, Why Not Hand Over a “Shelter” to Hermit Crabs?, artist Aki Inomata 3D printed clear plastic shells, modeled after famous cities or landmarks, like the New York City skyline, or The Netherlands' Windmills for Hermit crabs to call home.
On her site, the artist the piece is a statement on how "land is peacefully transferred from one country to another," and how people undergo the same transformation through "acquiring nationality, moving, and migration...Though the body of the hermit crab is the same, according to the shell it is wearing, its appearance changes completely. It’s as if they were asking, 'Who are you?'"
You can see more of the artists work, including videos of how the shells are made on her website.
