Makerbot is entering into the customizable figure market with it's 'Zee Blanks,' a rotund egg shaped blank figure what's design is on sale for $0.99 and once printed, can be painted however the artist feels fit. Makerbot says the design works on MakerBot Replicator 2, 5th Generation Replicators, and the Replicator Mini, and at 69mm x 86mm x 111mm, will take approximately 2:10:00 to print. For the printerless, Makerbot will be selling starter-kits at their New York, Boston and Greenwich, Connecticut retail locations.

Makerbot is joining this trend a little on the late side, and personally, this effort feels a little lacking. There are already a number of different customizable plastic figurine lines, including Kidrobot's MUNNY, and Pop! Vinyls that already have a strong hold on this recently receding market. Being able to print your own blanks does sound like a neat innovation, but artists with 3D Printers already have access to whatever designs they can make up, and having only one template feels very limiting in comparison.
